Steroid Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis SRMA

These range from being merely somewhat troublesome, through to some which are potentially very significant. The degree of side effects tends to be related to the dose used, but some individuals are more susceptible to side effects than others. This is when you increase your medicine dose to keep you well during periods of stress, illness or injury.

Steroids can also be given artificially in medication form to mimic some of these natural processes or to reduce inflammation in the body. Steroids are prescription medications and should only be given under the direction of a vet. While they can have side effects, they are very effective at treating a range of medical conditions and in some cases, steroids for dogs can even be lifesaving.

Tell them about the signs of adrenal crisis and what they should do if you have one. Sometimes, the underlying causes of Addison’s disease can be treated. For example,  tuberculosis (TB) is treated with a course of antibiotics over a period of at least 6 months. The prognosis for SRMA is generally very good, with most patients improving after two to three days of treatment and entering clinical remission within two weeks.

  • It is important not to alter or stop the treatment for epilepsy in dogs without veterinary advice.
  • There is no infection with this condition and the condition is therefore not contagious.
  • Sometimes if side effects are particularly problematic, additional medications may be added into the treatment plan so a lower dose of steroid could be considered.
  • If there is any concern about the integrity of the tablets a recommendation would be to change them for new tablets and to ensure that medicines are stored safely.

As epilepsy is a condition that cannot be cured, it is very likely that the animal will have to stay on treatment for the rest of its life. Dosage reduction should only be considered if the animal remains seizure-free for at least a year and should be very gradual over many months to prevent precipitating seizure. Complete blood profiles (liver function test and haematology) are recommended on a six monthly basis to monitor for the animal for potential side effects. Bromide is a much safer drug by its nature (form of salt) despite still causing increased thirst and appetite.

With a liquid NSAID, adjusting the dosage in very small increments, which can be slowly decreased over time, helps maintain an optimal balance between efficacy and safety for your pet. Flea and worming treatments that are POM-V can be dispensed providing that we have seen your pet in the last 12 months. Delayed or inadequate treatment can make the condition become chronic. In such cases they may develop further neurological symptoms, such as paresis (muscular weakness), ataxia (affects coordination and balance) and/or cranial nerve deficits which affect smell, taste and vision.

All of these steroid-induced side effects are reversible and diminish when the dose of steroid is decreased or stopped. Steroids have many different actions but are most commonly used for reducing inflammation (swelling) and managing the immune system. Don’t ever give your dog any type of medication without the vet’s recommendation.

How can I get my cat to take Prednicare?

The main clinical signs of SRMA are spinal pain and an elevated temperature – this pain is severe in the neck but can also be present to a lesser extent in the lower back. The pain is most severe when trying to touch the chin to the chest. Other neurological abnormalities are not expected with this condition. In Adrenal Cushing’s where there is a single adrenal tumour, it can sometimes be surgically removed.

The first choice drug for use in refractory epilepsy is Bromide in dogs, used in conjunction with Phenobarbitone. Some dogs may need to be started on a loading dose (five times the usual daily dose per day for five days) to rapidly get the blood levels within the therapeutic range. Long term use of any drug isn’t ideal but if 1 tablet every other day is what stops her itching and gives her good a good quality of life then I would be inclined to speak to your vet about trying this.

Living with Addison’s disease

These synthetic forms of cortisteroids are many times more potent than the naturally occurring forms and typically last much longer. Because of their increased potency and duration of activity, if synthetic corticosteroids are used, the patient must be monitored to minimise the risk of side effects. You may obtain relevant veterinary medicinal products from us OR ask for a prescription and obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy. Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe relevant veterinary medicinal products only following a clinical assessment of an animal under his/her care.

They may also be given dexamethasone sodium phosphate which may be administered intravenously in hospital in the first few days – in more severe cases. This involves doing blood and urine tests to look for an infection. They are also likely to do x-rays and cerebrospinal fluid for analysis.
